Bred To Boogie - 2011 EC Breed Sport Morgan Horse Of The Year

Bred To Boogie will be awarded the Breed Sport Morgan Horse of the Year at the 2012 Equine Canada Annual Convention in Newfoundland this February. This award will be presented by Breed Sport Canada. Joanne Dartana owns this lovely gelding.

Bred to Boogie, a 7 year old bay Morgan gelding by TVM I Promise out of J’St Coastin Countess, was purchased by Joanne Dartana in early 2011 from the United States. Joanne had been showing Morgan horses for about 11 years and was scouting for a new saddleseat horse for her 9 year old daughter Maya Beakhouse, who had just finished her first year of walk/trot, so trainer Karen Abel from Dawnville Farms put a notice on a website.

Joanne instantly loved Boogie after watching a video of him and decided to buy him. Joanne and Karen both knew he would be a winner since he is a full brother to multi World Champion stallion Born to Boogie and had already won the World Champion Futurity Classic Pleasure Driving 3 year old and Grand National Classic Pleasure Driving 3 year old and under at Oklahoma in 2007. However, when Maya told her mother she was not yet ready to give up her first Morgan horse, Joanne decided she would show Boogie herself, in Classic Pleasure Saddle.

After her first show with him, Joanne knew she had lucked out with this incredibly talented horse. Boogie was flashy and lively, yet graceful, consistent and well mannered. He turned out to be exactly what Karen was searching for, ”He’s a very true Morgan type, willing to work – a good work ethic.” Reassured that Boogie was gentle and safe enough for her daughter to show, Joanne encouraged Maya to show him at the next show. Thereafter, Boogie continued to shine for both Joanne and Maya. Under the expert tutelage of Karen and Stephanie Abel, Boogie succeeded in winning a total of 19 out of 24 classes entered, both adult and walk/trot, including 4 stake and 3 championship classes. Judge Garn Walker was so impressed by Boogie at the Alberta Morgan Horse Show that he chose him to be winner of the “Best Performance of the Show Award” sponsored by Horse Show Wire.

To end the show season, Boogie and Maya went on to earn a significant 6th place out of 16 in the competitive World Championship Classic Pleasure Saddle Walk/Trot 11 and under class in Oklahoma. Boogie was recently awarded numerous titles from the Alberta Morgan Horse Club including Champion Classic Pleasure Saddle Open, Reserve Champion Classic Pleasure Saddle Junior/Novice Horse, Champion Walk Trot Open Pleasure, Champion Walk Trot English/Hunt Pleasure and Reserve Champion Walk Trot English/Hunt Equitation. In addition, he was given high point awards from the Canadian Morgan Horse Association including Morgan National and Zone Champion Classic English Pleasure, Morgan National and Zone Champion Walk Trot Pleasure 12 and under, Morgan National and Zone Reserve Champion Walk Trot Equitation 12 and under and Morgan National and Zone Reserve Champion Youth Overall 12 and under. Equine Canada’s Morgan Horse of the Year Award is the perfect cherry to top off the year and Joanne and Maya are absolutely thrilled by the honour. What is truly exceptional about Boogie is that he excels in both adult and walk trot classes. Mother and daughter are itching to begin another fantastic year of showing their extraordinary horse, including Joanne’s debut in Classic Pleasure Driving and hopefully another trip to Oklahoma.

When asked what she loves most about their horse, Maya says “My favorite quality is his playful and sweet personality. Sometimes when his stall is being cleaned, he likes to grab on to the fork and swing it around. I also love how he’s not afraid of anything, even open umbrellas!”

Northern Exposure - 2010 EC Morgan Horse Of The Year

Canadian-bred Northern Exposure was awarded the Morgan Horse of the Year at the 2011 Equine Canada Annual Convention. The award was presented by Breed Sport Canada.

Northern Exposure is a 19 year-old Morgan gelding, born May 24, 1992. He was sired by Southerly Conowingo, out of DVF Remember Me, and bred by Kelly McDonald of Alberta.

Northern Exposure has been shown extremely successfully over the past 10 years in many divisions with his amateur owner, trainer and rider, Kathy Padgham. Together they have won numerous championships and titles, including Reserve World Champion Western Pleasure Youth, Reserve World Champion 4 th Level Dressage and Reserve World Champion 2 nd Level Dressage. He was also Grand National Champion in both Western and English Trail.

Equine Canada Announces Amateur Rule Change to Section G of Rule Book

Equine Canada has announced an amendment to Section G: Hunter, Jumper, Equitation and Hack rules, Article G108.2 Amateur Status, to include a pilot project where an Equine Canada amateur may hold an EC Instructor Beginner Certificate and teach within the context of the Instructor Beginner Certificate.

The Instructor of Beginner status applies to individuals 16-years-of-age or older who teach beginners at summer camps, trail riding establishments/clubs/schools, or assist at lesson stables. The Instructor of Beginners is capable of teaching at the beginner level, primarily on the flat and in the fundamentals of jumping, in a safe and constructive fashion. The Instruction of Beginner Program currently applies to the following disciplines; English, Western, and Saddle Seat.

The next level of certification is the Competition Coach. The Competition Coaches should be developing athletes for entry-level competitions (Bronze/Silver level). “Jump Canada has been approached by many people from different parts of the country requesting that Equine Canada certified Instructors of Beginners be allowed to show as amateurs,” said Pam Law, chair of the Jump Canada Rules Committee. “We thought we would try it as a pilot project and assess it after a year tosee if it has been a success.”

All seniors competing in amateur classes at EC-sanctioned competitions must possess a current EC amateur status, which is declared annually when purchasing an EC Sport Licence. For the complete definition of an amateur in Section G of the Equine Canada rules please visit the Equine Canada rules online for free at www.equinecanada.ca.
